How To Choose A Roof Color

November 2, 2020

The Right Roof Color

A roof is typically considered a utilitarian asset to your home and accounts for as much as 25-40% of your home’s visible exterior. Your roof color plays a key role in how your home is perceived from the street. It has the potential to add or detract a significant amount of aesthetic value to or from your home. This makes the already weighty decisions you must make when replacing your roof even more important. That’s why the color, materials and style you pick will tremendously impact your home’s curb appeal.

Six Tips When Choosing A New Roof Color

When choosing a new roof, take these six recommendations into consideration to help you choose the perfect look to complement your house.

  1. Consider the style of your home.

The style of your home should heavily influence the colors you consider for your roof. Do you hope to create a warm, welcoming vibe or a bold, dramatic statement? Traditional homes typically look best with a dark neutral color. A French country house may look beautiful with an earthy tone. Of course, a dark, rusty red almost always completes the look of a Mediterranean home

  1. Don’t be “too monotone.”

Matching your roof color too closely to your exterior wall color will result in a boring, monotone look. Strive for complementary colors, not matching. A few suggestions would be if your house color is light grey the recommended roof shingle color would be grey, black, blue and white. If your home is white, the best matching roof shingle colors are almost any color including brown, grey, black, blue and white.

  1. Find inspiration in similar homes.

When looking at other homes for inspiration, try to find houses in a similar style and size to your own. This helps you avoid falling in love with a certain roof color that looks amazing on one home, but doesn’t turn out well on yours. For example, you may see a photo of a smaller home with a dramatic, dark roof that looks stunning. If you put that same color on a large, highly visible roof with a steep pitch, the home will look too dark and gloomy.

  1. Ask about roof color change.

Many roofing and exterior wall materials change color over time. Before choosing your colors, ask to see examples of what the roofing and siding will look like in a few years. This will help to avoid the unpleasant surprise of a home with two different colors than what you originally pick out that in no way complement each other.

  1. Pay attention to lighting.

Look at the color you are considering in different lighting before making your decision. This tip is especially helpful in choosing the perfect color once you have your choices narrowed down to two or three.

  1. Think resale.

If you don’t plan to resale your home in the foreseeable future, you may not need to think about resale as much. But if you plan to sale your home before the roof will need to be replaced, pick a classic color such as black, brown and gray that the majority of buyers will like.
